How a fexon photo booth is made: 3D CAD, laser cutting, bending, powder coating

From CAD model to assembly: how we manufacture the aluminium housings of our photo booths at our factory in Greiz, and why laser cutting and powder coating make a difference for rental operators.

Every fexon photo booth is designed and built in Greiz, Thuringia: the aluminium housing is produced in our own factory from laser-cut, bent and powder-coated parts. This article describes the individual steps from planning to assembly.

Planning in 3D CAD

Our photo booths are planned and designed entirely in 3D CAD. As a result, all components are precisely matched, and improvements can quickly be adopted into ongoing production. The design also lets us calculate the airflow inside the housing so that, despite the compact build, no heat builds up around the computer and printer, and to run virtual load tests on the housing structure.

Laser cutting and bending

The housings are made of aluminium and cut on our laser cutting system. Aluminium combines low weight with high rigidity; the Photobooth Ready weighs 22 kg without printer. Laser cutting allows complex contours with high dimensional accuracy and repeatability. After deburring, the blanks are bent on a CNC press brake and fitted with threads.

Powder coating and quality control

After an initial inspection the parts go to powder coating. This surface is considerably more scratch- and impact-resistant than wet paint, which matters in everyday rental use with frequent transport. After coating we check every part again before the booth is assembled and fitted with the equipment chosen by the customer.

Our own parts from the 3D printer

We develop brackets and special solutions ourselves and produce prototypes and small parts on our in-house 3D printer. The factory and our sheet-metal work are shown on the manufacturer page; why material matters for a photo booth is explained in the guide Aluminium housing vs. wood and plastic.

Why do we manufacture ourselves?

If you make the housing yourself, you can implement changes within days: a different camera mount, a larger cut-out for a new printer model, an additional port. With bought-in housings that takes months or is not possible at all. Spare parts also remain available as long as we manufacture; a door or rear panel for a ten-year-old model is a standard job for us. For rental operators this means the investment does not depend on the lifespan of a supplier.

Where can you see the production?

The video on our home page shows our laser cutting system at work; on the manufacturer page we describe the six production steps. By appointment you can visit the factory in Greiz and inspect your booth before collection, see Contact.
